This scripture has taught me countless truths over the years, one of the most significant being, of course, how to pray.
I remember a time when I was so overwhelmed by depression that I could sit and stare at a wall for hours, unaware any time had passed. My thoughts were unstable, and I found myself repeatedly checking into the ER for safety. I remember saying, "Lord, if I can’t think straight, how am I going to pray a normal sentence to ask for help?"
In high school basketball, we would quote the Lord's Prayer, and at the time, it was probably the only scripture I knew by heart. In my desperation, I thought, Maybe if I just recite this over and over, maybe I won't die, and the Lord will pull me out of this darkness. So, I began to repeat it—over and over and over again.
Eventually, I began to realize that each part of the prayer had a purpose. It allowed me to: praise God; affirm His authority over all things; present my needs; repent and seek help from sin, darkness, or anything else in spiritual warfare; and end with praise. It taught me how to pray. It healed my wounds. And it drew me near to the Lord in moments of complete desperation.
Jesus taught us to pray. If you've never prayed this prayer, I encourage you to do so; it changed my life forever.

“Pray then like this:
‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.'”
Matthew 6: 9-13
